Interactive Installation
This work is an interactive video installation that records the viewer’s figure in real time while replaying “afterimages” from a few seconds ago and time-delayed footage.
The device is composed of a slender pole and movable arms, and the monitors tilt and swivel as if cocking their heads or peering in. Though it is a machine, its stance makes it appear somehow alive. When a viewer stands before it, there is a sensation as if they are entering into a “dialogue” with the apparatus.
In terms of imagery, four monitors present simple time delays controlled by Raspberry Pi, while the other four carry more complex transformations created in TouchDesigner. Using MediaPipe, the system detects the viewer’s blinks and mouth movements, and in response, three-dimensional “organisms” and “plants” appear and transform. For example, at the moment of a blink, the face is covered by a living entity, only for that presence to disappear when the eyes open again. When the mouth opens, a creature emerges from the mouth area; when the eyes then close, the plant transforms into the figure of a mantis.
It is, in a sense, a direct metaphor, but it points precisely to “invisible time” — beings that are born and vanish in the split seconds that escape our conscious awareness.
By allowing the viewer’s body, the afterimages of the past, and fictional entities to intermingle, this work attempts to give experiential form to the uncertainty of our memory and our sense of time.
